What sparked the initial vision for Remode Collective was the fact that the way we produce, use and dispose of clothes and textiles is unsustainable.
Textile production contributes more to climate change than international aviation and shipping combined, consumes lake-sized volumes of fresh water and creates chemical and plastic pollution. Synthetic fibres are being found in the deep sea and fish populations. Worse still, in the UK around 300,000 tonnes of textile waste, an estimated £140 million worth, ends up in household general waste every year and is sent to landfill or incinerators. Less than 1% of material used to produce clothing is recycled into new clothing at the end of its life. At Remode, we believe that we all play a key role in reducing the environmental impact of textiles.
We recognise the need to tackle this issue and see an opportunity to develop and establish a more circular economy in which we aim to minimize waste and make the most of existing resources. In a circular system, we strive to conserve energy leakage, by keeping resources in use for as long as possible, extracting the maximum value from them and reusing products and materials at the end of each service life.
