From Thread to Confidence: A Glimpse into Our Dressmaking Lessons
I wanted to give you a little glimpse behind the scenes of our dressmaking courses and hear your thoughts as well! Our approach is all about catering to your individual needs rather than fitting you into a rigid program. Everyone is different, and we love tailoring the experience to what works best for you.
Small Classes for Personal Attention
That’s why we keep our classes small—no more than 4 people—so you get plenty of one-on-one time with the teacher. This personal attention allows the teacher to observe how you're working and offer helpful tips. For example, if you're not placing your foot correctly on the pedal, she can show you how to make it more stable for better control and slower, more precise sewing.
Modern Sewing Machines for a Smooth Learning Experience
We also have a modern range of sewing machines, some even with a speed control button—perfect for beginners to build confidence. It’s just like using any tool: when you start, trying to cut with a dull pair of scissors or sew with a basic, rough machine can be frustrating. Many sewing classes invest only in basic machines, but we believe smoother tools help make the learning process more enjoyable.
Short Courses for Targeted Support
Our shorter courses tend to attract beginners or those who need quick, targeted help. For instance, we had a student return to us because she loved a trouser pattern but found the instructions too brief and confusing. We suggested some tweaks that not only improved the look but made it easier to sew.
Detailed Explanations for Beginners
For those just starting out, we offer detailed explanations of how things work, not just step-by-step commands. Sewing isn’t hard, but small details can have a big impact on the final result. For example, the type of fabric you choose can dramatically change the look of your project. We guide you on where you can experiment and where it's best to stick to the basics. You will receive clear, logical explanations for problems, such as adjusting the tension of the thread on the machine.
Step-by-Step Skill Building
Take waistbands, for instance—there are different methods, and without experience, it can be tricky to choose. We help you grow your skills step by step, ensuring that you're not overwhelmed by projects that are too advanced. Our advice is to build your knowledge gradually. After mastering a simple skirt, your next project could be trousers with pockets—something 70% familiar but with an added challenge to expand your abilities.
Keeping Costs Down by Reducing Waste
We also address the cost of lessons to make them more accessible. Many courses require you to bring your own fabrics, tools, and sometimes even machines. At our studio, we collect unwanted textiles and repurpose them in our courses, helping to keep them out of landfills. You’re welcome to select from these materials in the studio, which can ease the pressure of working with newly bought, expensive fabrics.
We provide everything you need—from thread to patterns—so you can focus on learning without worrying about extra costs. This can significantly reduce the expense of your project. For example, a nice cotton fabric for pajama trousers could cost around £20, with the pattern at £13, and thread and elastic at £6. Altogether, the cost could easily reach £40-60. When you learn with us, we supply most of these materials for free, saving you money while still allowing you to create something beautiful.
Our Mission: Sustainable and Affordable Sewing
We are a social enterprise with a clear mission: to reduce textile waste. This ethos is at the heart of everything we do, and it’s woven into all of our classes, along with valuable knowledge and techniques. These methods aren’t just good for the environment—they're great for your wallet too!
We’ve come a long way in our sustainability journey, and we’re here to offer you practical tips that fit your level. A sustainable lifestyle doesn’t mean compromising on style, and we can show you how to make eco-friendly choices while still creating beautiful, fashionable pieces.
