Student Works Stories 2.
Creating with fabric is a journey filled with challenges, learning moments, and triumphs. Here’s a glimpse into the ups and downs of some of our students' recent projects, showcasing their persistence and creativity.
Floaty Skirt
This beautiful skirt was made from scratch during our 4-week dressmaking course. The journey started with understanding the pattern (free from our library) and moved on to cutting and sewing the delicate, lightweight fabric.
Sewing such flimsy material for the first time was no easy task, but with guidance and support in the small group, our student mastered it step by step. It was amazing to see their skills grow and their confidence build with each stage of the process.
The result is a gorgeous floaty skirt—a testament to patience, learning, and creativity. Well done!
Stitch & Style: Refashioning and Mending with Embroidery
We had our first Stitch & Style workshop, and it was such an exciting experience to see everything we had dreamed for our students come to life! The session was both informative and inspiring—everyone felt useful as we dived into mending and design challenges.
After exploring a variety of samples for inspiration, we got hands-on with our own garments, including jumpers, trousers, denim jackets, and tops. One of the highlights was practicing darning together, a tricky technique that can be daunting without guidance.
It was incredible to see everyone leave feeling confident and inspired, with new skills and ideas to continue their mending and refashioning journey at home.
2 Favorite Damaged Shirts = 1 Perfect Shirt
In the dressmaking/sewing class, one participant brought in two damaged shirts that had seen better days but held a lot of sentimental value. Rather than discarding them, she decided to combine the best parts of each shirt to create a brand-new garment.
This process was not only a lesson in practical mending but also in creative upcycling. By carefully piecing together the intact sections, the participant crafted a unique, perfectly wearable shirt that retains the memories and comfort of both original pieces.
This project highlights the beauty of sustainable fashion—giving cherished items a second life while reducing waste. It's also a reminder that with a bit of creativity and guidance, imperfections can lead to something even better. What could be more rewarding than leaving a workshop with a garment that's both meaningful and truly one-of-a-kind?
